Best Fireproof Way to Store a 12-Word Bitcoin Seed Phrase
Paper burns at around 451 degrees Fahrenheit. A typical house fire reaches 1,100 degrees and stays hot long after the flames are out. If your 12-word seed phrase lives on paper, a house fire does not just damage your backup. It deletes your bitcoin permanently. The fix is a steel backup.
Why steel is the standard
Stainless steel melts at around 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, far above what a house fire produces. A properly stamped steel plate survives the fire that destroys everything around it. This is why steel backups are the standard recommendation across the bitcoin world. They protect against fire, and as a bonus they also survive floods, which paper does not.
Stamping beats engraving and etching
There are three common ways to get your words onto steel:
- Letter stamps and a hammer. A set of metal stamps and a steel plate is the cheapest reliable method. It is loud and slow, but the result is deep, permanent, and readable after a fire.
- Pre-made seed plates with letter tiles. Small metal tiles slot into a steel frame, one tile per letter. Faster and neater than stamping, and widely available.
- Electric engraving. A cheap engraving pen works, but the marks are shallow. In an intense fire, shallow marks can become hard to read.
Whichever method you choose, use stainless steel, not aluminum. Aluminum melts at about 1,220 degrees, which a serious house fire can reach.
How to do it right
- Work offline and alone. Never type your seed into a computer, phone, or website to “generate” a plate layout.
- Stamp the full 12 words in order, numbered 1 to 12. Double check every word against your hardware wallet’s verification screen.
- Store the finished plate somewhere it will not sit in standing water. Steel survives fire, but constant moisture causes corrosion over years.
- Make two plates and store them in different locations. Fireproof covers fire. It does not cover theft or losing the plate.
- Test readability. After stamping, read every word back in poor light. If you struggle now, you will struggle worse under stress.
What not to do
Do not laminate paper and call it fireproof. Laminate melts. Do not store the phrase in a “fireproof” document bag and assume it is enough; most bags are rated for 30 minutes and for paper documents, not for the total loss of a backup you cannot replace. And do not photograph your seed phrase. A photo in cloud storage trades fire risk for hacker risk, which is worse.
A steel plate costs less than dinner for two and takes an afternoon to make. It is the cheapest insurance in bitcoin.
