It works for single-sig. The moment your locking script is more complex than one signature, seed words alone do not recover your wallet. You need the descriptor too.

And here is the uncomfortable part: Bitcoin has no comprehensive standard for backing up full wallet data. Not in 2025, not now. One developer is trying to fix that.

The BIP draft

Pythcoiner, posting as @pythcoiner, has an open draft in the bitcoin/bips repository: PR #2130, currently titled “BIP139: Wallet Metadata Backup Format,” status Draft. The proposal was created in January 2025, posted to the bitcoin-dev mailing list, and covered in Bitcoin Optech Newsletter #399 in April 2026. It is still an open draft, not a merged standard.

The proposal specifies a format for exporting wallet backup data: accounts, descriptors, associated keys, labels, transactions, and PSBTs. The format is a UTF-8 encoded JSON file. Every field is optional except the base structure, which must include at least one account entry. Wallet software is free to ignore metadata it does not care about.

The motivation is plain: BIP 39 and BIP 32 standardize key recovery, but they preserve none of the wallet metadata needed for seamless migration or recovery. Every wallet vendor stores backup data in its own proprietary format, which means vendor lock-in and fragile recovery.

The prior art

The draft does not start from zero. Two existing BIPs cover pieces of the problem:

BIP 329, by Craig Raw, standardizes wallet labels. Labels are the notes you attach to addresses and transactions, and losing them on migration is a real pain.

BIP 393 covers Output Descriptor Annotations, a way to attach metadata to descriptors.

Neither covers full wallet data. The draft’s core argument, and the reason it matters for this site’s readers: the “a private key is enough, all you need is your seed words” attitude fails for multisig or any script more complex than single signature. You definitely need the descriptor in addition to the keys.

Why this matters for multisig users today

A standard does not exist yet, which means the responsibility sits entirely with you. Practical rules until one lands:

Back up the descriptor with the seeds. For every multisig wallet, export the BSMS file or the full descriptor text and store it in multiple locations. Digital copies are fine. Descriptors contain xpubs, which reveal addresses but cannot spend.

Seeds stay on steel, offline, in separate locations. Unchanged advice, and the classic seed phrase storage mistakes still apply. The descriptor backup is in addition to this, not instead of it.

Label your backups. Wallet name, quorum, date created, which devices hold which seeds. Future you, or your heirs, will not remember.

Test the restore. A backup you have not restored from is a hope, not a backup.

The draft also notes that HD wallets benefit from keeping extra wallet metadata, and it explicitly discourages storing mainnet mnemonics in these backup files, since backups may live online. Good hygiene: the backup format is for metadata and descriptors, not for seed phrases.

The bigger picture

A September 2025 thread on encrypted backups shows this conversation predates 2026 and is still unresolved. Standards move slowly. Wallets will keep using proprietary formats for a while.

That is exactly why the manual discipline matters now. The day a standard like BIP 139 ships and wallets adopt it, migrating a multisig between coordinators becomes as easy as moving a file. Until then, you are the standard. Export the descriptor, store it redundantly, and verify you can rebuild the wallet from your backups.

If you run multisig and have never exported your descriptor, do it today. Then check that your whole setup still makes sense with the multisig wizard, and confirm your devices and coordinator play well together in the compatibility checker.
